I’m going to see them August 2nd, so I’m really looking forward to this. I hope the tickets don’t sell out too fast, because I’m not in a rush to buy tickets just in case something comes up.

No setlists or videos out yet from what I can tell, but according to this interview they’ve added Cannibal and Sayonara Señorita. It’ll be interesting to see how well Cannibal works without Scott, we’ll have to wait for any videos to surface.

What are Friends For? desperately needs to be added to a setlist.

Also, “Cyanide Señorita” sounds like it would be an interesting song. Like “Sayonara” in a horrifically minor key.

Just one video so far from what I can find. No new songs on video yet, but in a nutshell Ban the Tube Top, Somebody Hates Me, and Take On Me (big surprise) have made the cut.

All I know is that they’d better still play The Kids Don’t Like It, or I will be rather cross.

According to Facebook, they’ve started playing Sayonara Señorita, Down in Flames, and Say Ten. Looks like they’re slowly adding in the rare songs to the setlist over the course of the tour. Makes me glad I’m seeing them in August, once they’ve had time to bring the setlist up to speed.

I love how both Down in Flames and Say Ten (or was it Skatanic?) were listed in the A Best of Us… booklet as songs they don’t play live.

Also, is there really that much demand for Say Ten? The only part I really like is the “save a plant, eat a cow” bridge, which would be really sick to see live.

Saw them last night. Here’s a list of all the ‘obscure’ songs they played:

      -Down in Flames
      -Say Ten
      -Slow Down
      -Sayonara Senorita
      -All I Want is More

It was an amazing show. They could still drop Brown Eyed Girl and replace it with The Fire or something. And I’d like to hear Brand New Song and Say Goodbye (which would work well as a closer). Still a great change of pace.

Nope, Take On Me is still in, clustered in as part of the Big Three (Beer, Sell Out) that they use to close the show now. They are changing up the setlist a bit every night, but from what I’ve found, The Set Up, The New Version of You, and I Want Your Girlfriend have all been cut from most of the sets. Shame since the two former are two of my favorite songs, but since we’re getting Down in Flames and SS that more than makes up for it.

And yeah, I was never crazy about Say Ten (or Slow Down for that matter) but it’ll be interesting to hear them live anyway. According to a post they made a month back or so, they did specify they were learning 10 new songs, so I’ll wait to see what else they have in store.

    • #27819

I don’t mind the former two being cut, I think those songs really relied on Scott’s vocals. I’ve seen videos with The Set Up, and it was okay, but I can’t imagine Matt singing New Version of You. I’m actually glad they’re seemingly tweaking the setlist around to what he fits in with.

From the band’s facebook: “Scott’s a Dork”, “Somebody Loved Me”, “Say 10”, “Slow Down”, “Sayonara Senorita”, what other dusty old gems that start with “S” should we dig up and put on the set list for San Francisssssssssco tonight!?” If they keep playing Somebody Loved Me at every tour date I will have absolutely no complaints.

Also, I don’t think they’re playing Kiss Me Deadly or Monkey Man anymore. I didn’t like Money Man much, but I’ll miss Kiss Me Deadly. Glad to see they’re phasing out a lot of the covers to focus on their original material anyway.

Streetllight’ll probably headline their hometown NJ date, the same way RBF headlined the Anaheim hometown date. Ah well.

Also I found this on the website of someone who reviewed one of their California shows.

I’m guessing the bold ones are the ones they mix up for each date. Based on my obsessive youtube scouring, I’m pretty sure the song after Trendy cycles between Join the Club, I’ll Never Be, and Everything Sucks, while the other 2 bolded songs cycle between their rarely played ones. Also glad to see what I think is the TKDLI/ITP transition from the live album.

I’m seeing them 2 nights in a row (8/6 Fort Lauderdale, 8/7 Orlando), so I hope I can get a good mix of different songs that way.

In Portland Maine they played many of the cool rare songs, here is what i remember in no particular order:

      Everything Sucks
      Tube Top
      Good Thing
      Your Guts
      F.U.
      SHAGN
      Sell Out
      Beer
      Take On Me
      Brown Eyed Girl
      Down In Flames
      Senorita
      Cannibal
      Say “Ten”
      All I Want Is More
      Where Have You Been?
      The Set Up
… I wonder if we’ll ever see “Don’t Start A Band” live again.

Yeah that was pretty much the set that I saw tonight, except they didn’t play All I Want is More, and they played Join the Club, Why Do All Girls Think They’re Fat, and S.R.

I don’t know if they’ve been doing this at other shows, but they played the breakdown to Where Have You Been?, and instead of going into the final repeated verse, they transitioned into Cannibal. It was sick. The banter isn’t down yet (the intro to WHYB? was especially dead, and after an awkward silence, Aaron screamed “Best intro ever!” and then apologetically whined, “We’re working on it!”)

Also, they closed with Sell Out-Beer-Take on Me, which is unfortunate because I HATE Take on Me as a closer. It’s not memorable for me at all.

They didn’t play it when I saw them at Rutgers last fall, though that was a reduced setlist. They’ve dropped, off the top of my head, at least Don’t Start a Band, You Don’t Know, and New Version of You.

Just got back from the Ft. Lauderdale show, tired and sweaty. Amazing show.

Here’s Streetlight’s setlist for anyone who’s interested, in vaguely correct order:
      Watch it Crash
Down Down Down to Mephisto’s Cafe
      We Will Fall Together
      Forty Days
What A Wicked Gang Are We
      Skyscraper
Everything Went Numb (caught me off guard, I don’t think they’d played this yet on the tour)
Me and Julio Down By The Schoolyard
      Would You Be Impressed
      Such Great Heights
A Better Place, A Better Time
      A Moment of Silence/Violence
      Here’s To Life
      Somewhere In The Between

RBF, of course, took the stage next. This was Aaron’s first show since he was hospitalized a few days ago, but you wouldn’t know it. Their performance was fantastic as usual.

Setlist, once again in vaguely correct order:
      Everything Sucks
      Trendy
The Kids Don’t Like It/In The Pit
      Ban the Tube Top
Down In Flames (sounds awesome, someone needs to put this on Youtube)
Why Do All Girls Think They’re Fat
      She Has A Girlfriend Now
      Good Thing/Your Guts
      Slow Down
      The Set Up
      Brown Eyed Girl
Where Have You Been/Cannibal (WHYB, as stated, has the breakdown and horn interlude from the live album, and then goes straight into Cannibal after that part. Also, I’m pretty sure I was the only person there that actually knew Cannibal)
      Join the Club
      Say 10
      Sayonara Senorita
SR (ska, punk, disco, country, death metal)
      Another F.U. Song
      Sell Out
      Tequila/Beer
Take On Me (I agree that i don’t love this as a closer. I know they “have” to play this song, but Sell Out-Take On Me-Beer would work alot better, I think.)

Overall, incredible show. I narrowly missed getting Matt’s or John’s setlist at the end, but I did manage to catch Aaron’s pick after Take On Me.

Seeing them again tomorrow in Orlando. Should be fun 😀

Welp, Orlando was incredible, as I expected. My voice is completely shot, and I don’t expect it to get better anytime soon. Totally worth it.

Streetlight’s set was almost the same as in Ft. Lauderdale. They played Failing, Flailing, but didn’t play Better Place, Better Time or Everything Went Numb.

Reel Big Fish’s only differences in setlist were that they didn’t play Slow Down or Sayonara Senorita, which was a shame. Aaron did seem a bit less energetic than the night before (he commented on how he wasn’t feeling well at one point), but the show was great all the same. A running gag was that they did the “Blues ending” riff to a bunch of songs, punctuating it with “because we’re in the House of Blues!” every time. Also, at one point they took a break for Dan to recite his “poetry” for us, which is is hilarious as one might expect.

    • #27912

Aaron acted like he wanted Scott to come up and sing backup on “Take On Me” during the New York show, but it seemed that he couldn’t find him. Not sure if there was a plan for Scott to play all along and somehow it fell apart, or if Aaron decided that he wanted Scott up there spur-of-the-moment and it was too hard to get it together on short notice.

On a related note, the performance was fantastic. They made the most of their limited set time.

Thanks man, the show was great – one of the best RBF I have seen so far.

The band is really tight together and you can tell this is a happy moment for them – as Matt confirmed us after the show.  They are free mentally and excited about how the new album is getting born – and it shows on stage: a lot of energy, fun and even coreographies! 😀

Expect a thorough concert report in the afternoon.

      annnnnd… here we go.

17/2/2012 – Orange, JB conspiracy, Mr. T-bone & Young lions, Reel big fish at Leoncavallo, Milan

The place is one of the historical squat houses in Italy (former industrial building in a semi-peripheral part of the city), a center of counterculture in the 70s and one of the cradles of the Italian ska scene.
Now it’s a bit more “institutional” but still not the most usual venue for a RBF concert.

Orange took the stage around 22.30. The hall was almost empty and they seem to be bothered by this (and by large bits of dust falling from the ceiling over the singer and guitarist).
Quite frankly, they failed to impress me: they sounded and looked like a ripoff of Greenday.

On the contrary, JB Conspiracy really gave me a great impression. They adopted the opposite attitude: while Orange seemed to assume that it’s the audience’s task to come up front, JB conspiracy took as their own task to lure people under the stage.
And they did a terrific job with a very energetic and well-played set. In the end I bought their EP and chatted a bit with the drummer, who’s a really nice guy. The set lasted about half an hour-40 minutes,

After them, one of the nicest bands in the Italian old-school ska scene took the stage: the Young lions, guided by frontman, singer and trombone player Mr. T-bone (who by the way looks a lot like the guy from “the Artist”).
They played a one hour set of swinging first wave ska rithms (with English lyrics and lots of sweet trombone solos) that really turned the audience on. By the time they finished the hall was packed with around 1000-1500 people.
A new album is coming out now, check them out and you won’t regret it, trust me.

And here we come to the main act…
The official setlist (I collected one from the stage and I have it under my eyes now) was:
      Everything sucks
      I want your girlfriend
      Trendy
      Good thing/Your guts
      the Set up
      Don’t start a band
      Join the club
      Brown eyed girl
      241
      Ban the tube top
      Snoop dogg baby
      Where have you been
      Monkey man
      She has a girlfriend now
SR[normal, punk, disco, country, metal, emo]/another FU song
      Beer
      —–
      Sell out
      Take on me

but I distinctly remember Slow down also.
Not too many surprises. But bear in mind most people here know them for the old ones.

The set was very energetic and pretty fast, which delighted my drummer (who is always mumbling about how RBF record versions are faster and better).
The band looked in great shape – John has put some weight on actually, but he looked good (in a terribly funny way) with his car racer jacket and cap. Aaron was wearing his famous Hawaiian shirt and the longest sidebeards ever. Ryland has now got long hair and when drumming looks like a sort of Dave Grohl (in his Nirvana days) with fair hair. Dan was so stylish with his gangster-style suit. Matt seemed a horserider while Derek was plainly “normal” (along with his character).
There were very few banters – as always when the guys are in Italy. I guess they’re afraid most of the audience doesn’t understand well English.
The band acted a lot as a group – more than I’ve ever seen them doing before – in various songs there were coordinated jumping/goofy dancing/comical sketch moments.
They rediscovered all songs featuring sax solos in order to give Matt some lightspot – actually, he just played the solos as they are on the records. His vocal harmonies were perfect.

Talking with Matt and Ryland after the show, I got some news on the album.
They have recorded complete demos for 15 tracks. Ryland has already done the recordings for some of them and he says “they all sound like very long drum solos. Each time I give a recording to the others to listen to, they say ‘add more!'”.
Aaron is still working on some of the lyrics; he is pleased with the songs: according to him, these are the best songs he has written in the past 10 years. Matt said that all songs are good, sometimes when you make an album there are a couple of sogns that you “have” to fit in, but in this case no song feels like this.
They plan to have the album more or less completed before summer.
I wanted to chat a bit with the other guys too, but since it was already 3 AM and a 2.5 hour drive was expecting us (me actually), we decided to leave. A great evening of peace, love and music.

Everything great? There’s only one thing bugging me: when I asked Matt how the new songs sound like, he said they are in the typical reel big fish style, no big changes. I hope this doen’t mean they lack invention.

The best he’s written in the past ten years makes me laugh. Aaron’s gone on record saying that most of the songs from both Monkeys and Not Happy are songs he’d written long ago. And Cheer Up! would have been finished more than ten years ago. So that leaves, like, eight songs.
